The New Theatrical Forum

G&S has launched the new online communications forum for the entire theatrical community of Port Elizabeth.

A popular request throughout the Eastern Cape has been for more effective communication between organisations and societies. G&S has done something about this, by launching the new, interactive and free forum that's both easy to use and accessible anywhere, anytime. This forum is not just for the Savoy Theatre, or G&S, but everyon, no matter who, or from where.

Whether you're an organisation, producer, amateur society, or individual, you have the opportunity to discuss your views about local productions, advertise your shows, yourselves, or just enter into general discussions about what is needed. You also have the opportunity to post your views anonymously should you so wish.

This can only work with your help, and if we all communicate with each other effecitvely, we can only serve to improve theatre in PE and the surrounding areas and work hard to improve all of our services to you.

Start now by selecting the Forum link on the G&S menu to the left and spread the word. Theatre in PE is on the global superhighway!

GUYS and DOLLS, directed by Robin Williams, musical direction by Shawn Lyon, choreography by Candice Johnstone, lighting by David Whitehouse, presented by the PE Gilbert & Sullivan Society, in association with Magnetic Storm and Algoa FM. (Savoy Theatre, to Saturday, May 31).

In purely Broadway musical solo composer/lyricist terms, Guys and Dolls, dealing with the New York gamblers, gangsters and other low-lifes that inhabited the literary  world of writer Damon Runyon, was - and is - to Frank Loesser what Annie Get Your Gun and Kiss Me Kate  were to Irving Berlin and Cole Porter in their respecive careers.

Which means that it is an American musical theatre classic, like the other two always capable of revival at regular intervals on Broadway and London's Great White Way.and in innumerable world-wide amateur presentations.

As such, it is at one and the same time, both a dangerous and clever choice for any musical society (even one as renowned for excellence as G&S) to attempt - dangerous, simply because of its stature, and clever because, when done well, it provides superb entertainment value, generated by the wide variety of almost caricatured characters and the sheer delight of hearing one of the best integrated musical scores - every song a winner - in the 120-year history of US stage musicals.
